HOW TO DO ARDHA SHALABHASANA 


ARDHA SHALABHASANA

'Shalabha' is the Sanskrit word for locust. ' Shalabhasana' is so called because, while performing it, the body assumes a posture which resembles a locust . When this asana is practised with one leg, it is called ' ARDHA SHALABHASANA,.

       How to do Ardha shalabhasana

1) Lie on the stomach with the face down to the ground.

2) Stretch both the arms beside the body and clench the first lightly. The hands can also be placed under the thighs.

3)  Inhale and retoin the breath till the completion of the asana.

4) Pull the body and raise either of the legs by about 25 cms off the ground.

5) Raise the leg as high as p

6) Stretch the soles of the feet. Hold  this position for five to thirty seconds. Then slowly bring the leg down on the ground. 

7) Exhale very slowly.

8) Repeat this exercise with the order leg. This asana can be repeated 5 to 8 times.

Benefits


a) As far as the spine bend is concerned, this asana is inverse to pashchimattasana.
 This asana gives twist backwards to the spine. 

b) Bhujangasan develops the upper part of the trunk, while shalabhasana develops the remaining lower part of the trunk.

c) It is very useful in extricating waste matter accumulated in the intestines .

d) It cures lumbar pain and reduces excessive for formed around the knees , the thighs , the waist and abdomen. 

e) It gives good exercise to the abdomen. Kidneys and the liver become active. It strengthens the ovary. 

f) It cures constipation,gas-trouble , indigestion, dysentery, and other abdominal disorders.

g) The practice of this asana counters tendencies to piles . It removes the aches of the soles of the feet and cures the disease of the appendix.
